Natural Dye

I use all natural dyes to give color and life to my work. I strongly believe that our bodies are an extension of the Earth, and the Earth is an extension of our bodies. While not always light-fast, natural dyes serve as a fleeting reminder of the boundless gifts nature provides us. Some of my favorite botanical dyes include avocado pits and skins, onion skins, red cabbage, logwood shavings, osage orange sawdust, indigo, madder root, pomegranate skins, cutch, and cochineal.

Natural dye processes are so unique in the fact that
even the slightest changes in pH, temperature, and concentration can shift color entirely. I embrace
the fact that no dye can be recreated exactly. Each time I dye a skein, I try to alter my recipes to see what new color or tone I can create.
