Crochet
Crochet is a centuries-old practice that was passed down to me from Grandmother. I connected with this practice early in college as a therapeutic hobby, not knowing it would grow into one of my greatest passions. It soon became a way for me to connect more deeply with myself, but also with the Matriarchs that raised me. I love the intimacy of crochet. The maker's touch and infinite energy become a permanent part of each object.
In my pieces, I like to combine traditional crochet practices with new, contemporary processes. Filet crochet originated in the mid-1800’s and was created to mimic lace, but was much faster and easier to pick up. I adore filet crochet because making your own unique patterns is a simple matter of a pencil and graph paper. While it is one of the most primitive forms of crochet, it allows me to incorporate any text, imagery, and design with the elegant and delicate appearance of lace. I draw inspiration from both vintage and antique crochet patterns, and contemporary high fashion brands like Bode, Nosesso, Helmstedt, and Kepler London.
